Advice on coping, managing and succeeding through this time of fear and crises

We are living through a time of crisis that affects our health, our work and our businesses. It is an era of fear and worry for families, friends, partners, customers and, of course, ourselves. It is natural to be afraid and worried, or even angry. It seems overwhelming because it is.

A better writer than me wrote that “fear is the little death” as it freezes the mind into inaction, yet now is the time to act. It is important to focus on what one can do rather than rage against what cannot be controlled. Our attitude and choices are all we can really control, as this tragedy is the ultimate reveal that control is often an illusion.

Meanwhile, doing nothing has a clear end. For many of us it means hardship and loss. None of us want to lose our businesses, our work and the wealth of our efforts. While much is frozen around us, we must find new ways to adapt, change and survive. I’d start by making a list of things that can be done such as:

  1. Apply for all the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) offers you can.
  2. Apply for EIDL (Economic Injury Disaster) loans at 1% interest and in some case a $10,000 grant.
  3. Take a hard look at your digital business game. Do you have one?
  4. Update your website, post new content.
  5. If you sell to others, then offer online purchase it is not costly nor hard to do.
  6. Get on the phone and talk to your suppliers and providers. You will find them willing to help as they are in the same situation as you. They would rather get something than nothing.
  7. Communicate with your customers. Tell them you are there to help. Tell them what you are doing and what you can do. Offer remote help and support.
  8. Spread your skills. If you know about things like setting up a home office or using video conferencing then offer that even if it was not your line of business.

 

This list is not an end but a beginning. If there is anything on it you are not doing, then start. Be flexible of mind as much as you can. During the last big downturn from 2008, firms and individuals who focused and pivoted their efforts did much better than others. Many great works get done brick by brick and only later do we see how far we could come.
